Particulates in Fuels

When analysing fuels for particulates and water contamination, simple particle counts and low resolution sizing may not give the full picture. Particles present in fuels could be water droplets, corrosion products, or dirt from tanks and delivery systems. Knowledge of particle size, type and concentration makes quality control more relevant, and troubleshooting easier.

The Laboratory Visual Analyser from Jorin, uses video imaging and advanced image analysis software, to provide detailed information on the size and type of particles present in fuels. LaVA can classify particles as water droplets or solids, and using particle shape provide information on the solid material type.

The LaVA software presents particle size distributions for each particle type identified, together with volumetric concentrations for each distribution. The measured size range is from 2 microns to 250 microns with concentrations from 1ppm to 1500ppm. All particle data is stored as Excel files and is available for detailed analysis.

LaVA is suitable for use with all motor and aviation fuels, and a wide range of lubricating and hydraulic oils. Onsite demonstrations are available.

ASTM D2276 - 06 Standard Test Method for Particulate Contaminant in Aviation Fuel by Line Sampling

This test method provides a gravimetric measurement of the particulate matter present in a sample of aviation turbine fuel by line sampling. The objective is to minimize these contaminants to avoid filter plugging and other operational problems. Although tolerable levels of particulate contaminants have not yet been established for all points in fuel distribution systems, the total contaminant measurement is normally of most interest. The Appendix X1 color rating method is useful for fuel system monitoring purposes. No quantitative relationship exists between gravimetric and color rating test results.

SK Energy Opens 2nd Oil Field in Vietnam

SK Energy on Wednesday said it has successfully tapped the 15-1/05 oil field in Vietnam, its second fruitful oil field there following the 15-1.

Korea's leading refiner has a 25 percent stake in the offshore field, located some 180 km southeast of Ho Chi Minh City. The remainder is owned by Petrovietnam Exploration Production, a subsidiary of the Vietnamese state oil company (40 percent), and France's Total (35 percent).

SK Energy has been exploring the field after signing a contract in February 2007 and began drilling in August. Recently it produced 4,300 barrels of crude oil per day from the field. The total size of the oil deposits has not been confirmed yet.

VN, RoK agree to forge strategic Partnership

VGP – State President Nguyễn Minh Triết and President Lee Myung-bak agreed on Wednesday to lift the relationship between Việt Nam and the Republic of Korea (RoK) to "strategic comprehensive partnership."

The agreement was reached during the leaders' talks this morning in Hà Nội, which RoK's news agency Yonhap called a "Summit."

RoK becomes the fifth country to set up a strategic partnership with Việt Nam after China, Japan, India, and the Russian Federation, meanwhile Việt Nam is the third partner at the level with the East Asian country following China and Russia.

The bilateral ties have undergone unprecedented advancements since the two countries set up diplomatic ties in 1992 and that would be the sound reason for the two sides to forge the relationship.

The leaders also agreed to set up dialogue between the two countries' defense and foreign ministries to foster cooperation in security and political ties.

They highly evaluated the fact that bilateral trade between the two countries increased 20 times from US $500 million in 1992 to US $10 billion in 2008,

They were unanimous that more efforts should be given to double bilateral trade to US $20 in 2015 and agreed to launch a joint study on the feasibility of a bilateral free trade agreement before the year's end.
Especially, President Lee recognized Việt Nam's market economy status, a move that could significantly improve protection for Vietnamese businesses and their products in trade with the RoK.

The Korean leader appreciated Việt Nam's valuable contributions to the world's peace and stability during the past years, especially since Việt Nam became a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council.

For the relationship between the RoK and ASEAN, President Lee called for closer cooperation with Việt Nam, which will take the chair of ASEAN next year.

State President Triết confirmed Việt Nam's consistent policy to advocate peace, stability, and cooperation in the Korean Peninsula; highly spoke of the RoK's efforts to settle nuclear issue there.
